Siwok Crafts, Argentina
Abuelita concentrates on her craft
Siwok Crafts is a socio & ecologically sustainable business that produces crafts
with the Wichí Indian communities and urban poor of NW Argentina. Although
for the past 20 years it´s been independent, it has close contacts with the
social programs of the local Anglican Diocese.
Work was started in 1980 and now gives a living income to more than 100 Wichi
families and more than 40 urban families. This work prevents Indians migrating
to the towns where they loose their health, education, language, culture & self
respect. Siwok crafts are hand made by the Wichi people that live in the Chaco plains of
NW Argentina. All materials come from local surroundings
These comunities have survived as hunters/gathers, but this way of life is
rapidly changing. Siwok Crafts provides a way for the people to adapt to these
changes without losing their culture and identity.
