These original paintings from Senegal are portraits of daily life. Each painting, painted on the inside of cigarette cartons, is 5 by 7 inches and contained within an 8 by 10 inch black artist's mat which beautifully accents the artwork. All pieces are original and subjects will vary from the subject matter to the orientation (portrait or landscape). The piece is sold on cardboard with a description of the painters, brothers Dioss and Issa Ly.
Brothers Dioss and Issa Ly live at their gallery and workshop in Thies, Senegal, which is about 2 hours from the capital of Dakar. Art is truly a family business as their father, Samba Ly, makes his living selling his own oil paintings while their mother sells crafts.
Painting together since 1998, Dioss and Issa have learned to capture the brilliant colors and fluid beauty of the people of West Africa. They depict in painting the dignity and vibrancy of life from one of the least developed regions in the world.
