A non-governmental, non-profit organization, the Mitra Bali Foundation acts as a market and export facilitator for small craft producers who miss out on Bali's tourism market. Without direct access to the Bali road arteries, it is difficult for producers who have little working capital to access markets. To counter the marginalization of these producers, Mitra Bali works with about 100 producer groups employing over 1,000 men and women. Pricing and costs are discussed with the producers. Costs are broken down to ensure that all expenses, as well as an allowance for profit, are covered. Buyers are introduced to producers and can, if they prefer, work directly with individual groups. Each order is placed with a 50% deposit and producer groups are supported by field staff during production. The balance is paid upon completion of each order.
